Mercersburg Inn, that place is "Solid"

I’ve traveled to Mercersburg a couple of times now. Each time I have had the pleasure of staying at the Mercersburg Inn. The inn is a bed and breakfast located in the 1900’s built colonial mansion. There are over 12 bedrooms and opulent decor throughout. The most striking feature of the home is the double staircase in the Grand Foyer, all deep mahogany wood.

I have been fortune both times to stay in the original owner’s master suite. The room has its own private deck overlooking the grounds: lush green lawn, tree lined yard, blue sky, puffy clouds, Allegheny Mountains in the background. The king sized, four poster bed was as comfortable as you could ask for. The bathroom is larger than most living rooms. Although there is Wi-Fi, there is only a single television in the entire house. The current owners have taken up residence in the basement, the old servants’ quarters. Their living room doubles as the game room for guests. I was concerned that I would be unable to fall asleep without the dulcet tones of Rachel Maddow decrying the Donald Trump candidacy and his racist ignorance.

The restaurant and bar at the Inn are only open on the weekends. This forced me to go into town looking for a tavern. Before I found an open restaurant, I found the liquor store. I picked up a bottle of rye for later. All three restaurants in town on the same block, but two of the three closed because the owners were on vacation. Mercersburg Mansion House won by default that day. Very “solid” bar food. Everything on the menu was “solid” as the server told me.

I ask, “How are the burgers?”

“Solid” was his reply.

“How are the chips?”

“Also solid, house made.”

“Anything to avoid?”

“Nope, it’s all solid.”

After a burger and some chips, it was back to the Mercersburg Inn. I found a rocks glass, a little ice. Sat on the veranda. Opened the rye. Solid.
